Too often, when people see a very fit person, they assume that person must have won the genetics lottery; he or she was simply blessed with an enviable physique. It was quite the contrary for me.
I was a big baby (9 plus pounds at birth), and then I was a big kid. I was taller than my classmates in every grade, but I was fat and soft. I dreaded the old “shirts and skins” basketball games we played, hoping to be on the shirts team.
In my late teens, I discovered bodybuilding, and I was quickly hooked on it as I began to see results. This was the late 70’s and bodybuilding was far from mainstream so I trained in some dungeon like gyms with some hardcore people ranging from pro wrestlers to police officers.
From the outset, I was fascinated by the science associated with gaining muscle and losing body fat, and i devoured any and all information I could find. This was way before the internet so I had to rely on a skimpy selection of muscle magazines hoping the information there was accurate and not just published to sell dubious supplements.
Nevertheless, I spent my twenties on a crazy bodyweight rollercoaster. My weight literally ranged from 185 (too light for my 6’2” frame) to 260 (too heavy unless I was hoping to grow to 6’8”). In retrospect, I think there was a part of me that didn’t think I “deserved” the physique I desired.
In my early 30’s, I found myself well on my way back up to 260 (keep in mind, I was devoted to my weight training regardless of my eating habits). I was around 230 at the time. I made a decision to stop the madness, and endeavor to be the healthiest 230 pounder I could be. That change in mindset was the key to the physique I now have at 61 years old! Within 6 months, with no depravation dieting, I was a lean 200 pounds, and I’ve never looked back.
Having retired from a successful career in Marketing Services, I am now focused on my true passion: helping others overcome the myriad obstacles preventing them from being their personal best. I focus beyond the mechanics of proper weight training, and help my clients achieve the mindset that will virtually guarantee success.
